Why can we pray but cannot minister? Silver pin by Sophia Zakharova talks about the female relationship with religion and religious authorities. For exhibition "OVERREACTING. Jewelry Speaks Feminism & Gender" she's creating a series of pins/necklaces exploring the female relationship with god and religion.
"Being invited to participate in "OVERREACTING", I started to ask myself where the issues of feminism and gender touch me personally. The answer was: religious practice. Since I was a little girl I always felt it was unfair that only boys could become Priests, Rabbis or Mullahs. I created this collection ‘Wanna Pray Maybe?’, modeling four pairs of praying hands after my own - female - hands. The pieces – large, bold and hard to ignore – are exactly what I want women’s claim to religious authority to be".
