Voices from the Railroad: Stories by descendants of Chinese railroad workers
Publisher: Chinese Historical Society of America (CHSA), San Francisco, California

Voices from the Railroad: Stories by descendants of Chinese railroad workers was published in 2019 by CHSA to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the U.S. transcontinental railroad. This 100-page book reveals the stories of Chinese railroad workers and their descendants, whose families are now 4th, 5th, even 6th-generation Americans. The book highlights the experiences of the Chinese who helped build America, and dispel the notion of these people as nameless, faceless workers lost to history.

I designed the book and infographics, and was fortunate to have access to historic photographs and artifacts provided by descendants to illustrate their families' histories.

The book was edited by historian Connie Young Yu and former CHSA Executive Director Sue Lee. It features first-hand narratives by railroad worker descendants Gene O. Chan, Montgomery Hom, Carolyn Kuhn, Paulette Liang, Russell N. Low, Sandra K. Lee, Andrea Yee, Vicki Tong Young, and Connie Young Yu.
