The Peranakan Project

The term Peranakan is an Indonesian or Malay word that means ‘local born’ and has largely been used to refer the Peranakan Chinese. The richness of the Peranakan Chinese cultural heritage arose with the influential mix of overseas
Chinese men and local Malay women which evolved more than six centuries ago in this part of the archipelago, in old
Melaka. But it is fast slipping away a sun setting phenomenon, fractured and hampered over the years by factors
beyond their control.

The society chose not to know the pass (traditions, heritage) actually constructed present day Malaysian.
There was a reluctance to examine the historical consequences of assimilation. Instead, the society wish to erase the journey taken could be interpreted as nostalgia and clinging to the glorious past. Thus, the ‘new’ or ‘modern’ Malaysian in such culture figuration was seen as having new beginnings, new births, new origins which effectively concealed the truths of its formation and the means of its acceptance into contemporary society.
Culture value are being replaced by modern thinking. Traditional motifs and symbols, are closely associated with the family’s or community’s spiritual values, are now losing their links and their significance, particularly among the young generations.
