Completing four decades of his career in the music film industry, Anu Malik talks about his autobiography, his life and his fresh career beginnings. A gem of Bollywood mainstream music and an inspiration to every budding musician and artist, Anu Malik has created more than 350 music compositions, receiving several accolades for his music across the country.

In a recent interview, Anu Malik talks about his desire to never write an Autobiography as he believes his life to be an ongoing endeavor with his career starting anew with every new project that he takes up.

Anu Malik started his music career at the age of 20 with his debut for the movie ‘Hunterwali’ in 1977 to even creating one of the most peppy songs ‘Gori Gori’ for the blockbuster movie ‘Main Hoon Na’.

Anu Malik has created his unique style of music in the world of mainstream commercial cinema delivering scores that have appealed to generations across decades.

His western music inspired style along with the thumping of the classical tabla has enabled him to curate a genre of music that stands apart from the notes of mainstream Bollywood and yet is able to pull the strings of millions across the country.

Anu Malik grew up amidst the tunes and notes of music, learning the art from his father and musician Sardar Malik and he realized his love for the art of music at an early age. At seven, Anu Malik could create songs from any words within seconds and with this talent, he has managed to stay grounded even after four decades in the industry.

Although stepping into the industry in the early 90s with songs like ‘Ek Jaan Hain Hum’, ‘Sohni Mahiwal’ ‘Ganga Jamuna Saraswati’, ‘Aasman’, ‘Love Marriage’, ‘Mard’, ‘Mujrim’, ‘Jeete Hain Shaan Se’, it was only after a decade that Anu Malik’s music struck a chord with the audience.

His career took off with his compositions for the movie ‘Baazigar’ in 1993 for which he also received his very first Filmfare Award as a music director. He then went to create some of the most iconic and popular tracks for movies like Sir, Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Ayee and Akele Hum Akele Tum.

In 2001, Anu Malik music received a much wider recognition as he won the National Film Award for the best Music Director for the movie Refugee.

Anu Malik cemented his way into the industry with back-to-back hits comprising romantic Ghazals such as ‘Tere Dar pe Sanam’ for ‘Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayi’ and ‘Baazigar O Baazigar’ for ‘Baazigar’ to dance numbers; and groovy singles such as ‘Ooonchi hai Building’ for the movie Judwa and ‘Tumse Milke Dil ka’ for the movie ‘Main Hoon Na.

He won his second Filmfare Award for the film ‘Main Hoon Na’ in 2004 and ever since has received more than 42 nominations over the past four decades for his music directions and compositions. His music has also received worldwide appraisal as his song ‘Chamma Chamma’ from the film China Gate got featured in the international classics of all times Moulin Rouge.

Living a life as a music director, Anu Malik also ventured into playback singing over his course of a grand career giving vocals to iconic songs like ‘Julie, Julie’, ‘Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein’ , ‘Ek Garam Chai Ki Pyali’ and many more. Having conquered the Bollywood Music industry, Anu Malik honoured as one of the judges for the popular reality show Indian Idol for several seasons, was also a jury member of the show ‘Entertainment ke lie Kuch Bhi Karega.’

Anu Malik has ruled the 90s with his music and still stands strong today as his passion for music takes him a long way ahead. His recent compositions for movies like Shootout at Wadala, Dum Laga Ke Haisha and Sui Dhaaga has led him to receive great popularity amongst the youth of today.
