There’s a trend looming over the nightlife scene, nightclubs and bar attendance has been on a consistently slow and steady decline for the past several years, venues are going out of business and potentially more are threatened to close their doors. This trend isn’t only exclusive to Ireland; the U.K. & America are also experiencing a similar slump in their once world-renowned nightlife scenes. Clubs in Ireland are closing and changing due to perceived alcohol-related problems and anti-social behavior. However, the real reason many clubs have closed down are due to gentrification and a “millennial” cultural shift. Warehouses and venues make way for hotels and apartments, in a country where there is currently a housing crisis the loss of a club scene might not seem like that much of a sacrifice. The rise of late night bars and pubs are increasing though bringing with them their own set of issues and challenges. The advent of 24-hour gyms and an emphasis on “healthier lifestyles” jeopardizes the way we might have perceived the club scene. Social influencers are putting pressure on their peer groups to be more, do more. Because of this puritanical trend, many clubs have simply closed down or close earlier, they have not stayed up to date with the needs of an ever-changing society. The scene will never again be what it might have been in the past. While this may seem like a problem now, this is not the case, clubs just need to evolve and change as we need to change the way we think clubbing is meant to be.
