Glitchhop Gig Poster

A Glitchhop Gig
The objective for this project was to create a non-literal gig poster for a fictitious band. Music has a colorful history of rebellion in its blood so I decided to make up a band in the contemporary music genre of EDM. Not many people know about this type of music or have heard of it. My goal was to create poster for the band that could relay the essence of their music for hypothetical fans of this band and others who see the poster.
The idea concept portion of this project took the longest amount of time. I did a lot of brainstorming and changed my idea many different times. I listened to chillstep and glitchhop, which are two subgenres of dubstep to get a feel for the music and searched for things that symbolically portrayed life. I researched animals and plants and finally landed on fungi...specifically, mushrooms. Then I planned to distort it because every genre of dubstep is based on taking basic, core, traditional patterns of music and warping them with electronic sounds.
The first draft was a single mushroom where I took lines and physically moved them to create a glitch effect. I wanted to re-create the form of the mushroom and I asked for feedback in how to create a glitch-y effect. After going over the critique I received, I re-positioned the fungi, saturated the colors, and researched tools that would allow me to create a finer distortion look in Illustrator.
I used the scallop tool to try to create a more television distortion and turned the background into a calm yet chaotic "buzz". When I thought about what colors to use, I thought of fire and how it constantly eats and consumes to stay alive. It's full of energy. I also thought about the sun rising and setting with dramatic, fiery colors. The end result is a gig poster with a simple design of two glitched and distorted mushrooms in a void of white noise.
