MADE MEN Film Festival

MADE MEN: Scorsese & DeNiro
Film Festival Identity Brief

For this Final Major Project, I chose to design a film festival celebrating the relationship between the two legends, Martin  Scorsese and Robert DeNiro. Over the decades the two have collaborated on films that defined the decades in which they were made and are particularly recognised and praised for their involvement with the crime drama.
This festival would be six days long and show six films starting with Mean Streets on 6th July, followed by Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino and finally The Irishman on the 11th July. The Irishman is their latest collaboration and rumoured to be their last, the film is said to only have a screening in selected cinemas which is why I chose to show it at the Tyneside Cinema in my brief as this is a popular independent cinema and it gave the project authenticity.
The brief challenged me to design a brand for this festival, an A1 poster advertising the festival, six commemorative posters celebrating the films, a keep sake programme, tickets and web pages were needed and the brand identity had to be coherent. Through research of the men’s lives, the films and the time period in which they grew up I was able to source appropriate typefaces and manipulate them to my liking. Made Men is appropriate for the title because as explained in the programme, being a Made Man means that you’re untouchable and it really connotes legendary status.
Ticketing

The theme that I chose for the film festival is money. All of the characters in the six films are in some way involved with money and the $100 bill is a symbol of the crime drama. This lead me to create a double sided ticket including Scorsese & DeNiro on either side portraying them as royalty or people of authority. The paper stock and design of the tickets had to represent money but not to such an extent that it was not recognisable as a ticket. The size helps keep the tickets simple and effective. I did not want the tickets to have to be torn or stamped and more of something that the viewer can treasure as everything else in this brief is commemorative.
Commemorative A2 Film Posters

Commemorative Keepsake Festival Programme

I designed a programme for the festival which gave trivia based information about the two men as well as behind the scenes facts relating the the six films. The films are all hugely iconic and well known within the film industry which is why I chose to base my programme information on things that fan s are less likely to know thus making the publication more engaging and interesting as an artefact. I was able to structure a suitable grid and edit photos to give the publication a coherent look and feel while not being distracting from the information stated.
Printed Post Cards

In the back of the programme, I made an insert for a post card which I thought would be a nice touch increasing the special value of the programme. I made postcards for each of the films and thought that it would also make the reader feel more exclusive, like they own something that others may not as the post cards would be selected at random. This was also a good opportunity to make use of the woodblock type and collage style image making that I enjoyed throughout the project.
Web Pages

Alongside all of the commemorative special artefacts, I also had to design web pages for the festival. The web pages display information about the festival, tickets, the films and merchandise. Although the web pages are not real and functioning, the layout is designed to that of a real webpage.
