What Yugoslavia could have been if the 1990s Balcan war never happened war?
Music video "Yustalgija" is a theory of alternative history, responding to the question what would happen if the 1990s war in the region never happened and Yugoslavia never broke apart.
Throughout the video, we have offered many possible paths for Yugoslavia, from technological and social progress to becoming one of the most influential countries in Europe.
Yustalgija is simply a strong song that was supposed to have a strong visual message behind it. The first time I heard the song I knew immediately that I will work with this idea. Unfortunately from the first idea where we wanted to create a situation where the music video would literally be like some sort of blockbuster film addressing individual living people in Yugoslavia throughout the region, the reality of the budget was slapping us in the face and we decided to tell the same story, but more specifically targeted and easier to make.
Music video provides multiple views, through the narrative it takes you into the story and then gives you all seen in two versions, the one of which you are reading in the media and books, and a realistic one that let you experience the alternative history from a subjective view. As in the real world, the video gives the ability to discern for yourself what is good and what is bad, right or wrong. Music video is crawling through different motives, and questions you whether it is necessary to believe everything that is written in the media, because the reality in the video looks bad.
Through a speculative alternative history we spiced up various little things from the real world, involved our imagination and tried to create a world that is not only possible but can be parallel.
For me, this idea was in my head for some time, I'm not even Yugonostalgic and actually the only thing that interests me is what would really happen if this was actually true, what would happen if something has gone in the other direction - I used creativity and historical intrigue to follow me through the video.
