The SpinAwards 2019 event took place at Escape club in Amsterdam last summer and we're happy to share the opening titles we created for this event! We used this project as an opportunity to experiment with drone footage and 3D tracking. MassiveMusic also helped us out by creating the soundtrack to this grid-based motion piece.
MOODBOARDS: LOCATION + GRAPHICS
One of our first tasks in the project was to gather some references that reflected the style we were aiming to produce. We focused on overhead drone and satellite footage as well as grid-based design and typography.
Next, we produced a series of styleframes using some of our early tests in drone photography. We quickly realized that by camera-tracking these images, we could insert additional 3D elements that contributed to the grid-like appearance of each location.
The following step was to test the various ways in which we could add movement to the piece, both in regards to camera movement, typography and the motion of the inserted 3D objects.
Once we had pinpointed a more definite style, we launched into the final production of the piece. We wanted each category of the awards show to be represented by a different landscape, and hence we set forth to film a number of locations across the country. We scouted and chose locations based on their potential to be incorporated into a grid system. We visited fields of solar panels, windmills, factories, parking lots, and a score of other landscapes to finally settle on about 15 different locations for the actual piece. These were then camera-mapped by our team of motion designers so that 3D elements and typography could be added to each scene.
In anticipation of the SpinAwards Night at Amsterdam’s famous Escape nightclub, we built a 3D model of the venue that allowed us to test various LED set-ups in combination with the main video. The various lights available at Escape accentuated the video and provided an exciting and immersive introduction to this celebratory evening.
