The Disappointment of Our Errors

This piece is about human error and the devastation that it may cause. The error made by the person who has accidentally spilled water on their laptop is a reflection of the supposed error made when a US gunship aircraft mistook a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan for a nearby building and killed 42 people when the hospital struck. I decided to combine them to create a conversation between the two and allow the viewer to come up with their own conclusions about the consequences of our actions, regardless of whether or not they were done on purpose.
I began this piece by doing very basic thumbnail sketches to get down the composition. I then drew the basic outlines in Adobe Illustrator and started colouring. This was the first time I had ever used the Live Paint tool, and I had a bit of difficulty near the beginning when some of my lines weren't fully connected, but it turned out to work quite well once I got the hang of it. I had so much fun making a kitchen space and creating little objects to be placed throughout the room.
