Alice In Wonderland, Reimagined

Client: Personal Schoolwork

In my Concepts & Composition class at SCAD, we were instructed to create two story illustrations based on Alice in Wonderland, but with a twist—we had to choose a different setting or time to translate the story into. For my illustrations, I chose to put Alice in the heart of the 60's Summer of Love—specifically, in a music festival called "Wonderland." Not only do I love the aesthetic and colors of this era, but I thought it was a pretty clever way of explaining all the weird stuff that happens in the story (drugs, anyone?)

In my version of the story, Alice is an English college student coming to America for the first time to study. She attends this music festival the summer before school starts, and it serves as a kind of rite of passage or awakening into this new world.
For my first illustration, I drew the scene between Alice and the Caterpillar. I wanted to give it a very loose, sketchy vibe, and of course use the colors to create the mood of the era and the story.

My spot illustrations were the cutest lil hippie bong, and a decorative letter A.
For my second illustration, I reimagined the Tea Party in the original Alice in Wonderland as a campfire scene. The Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and the Doormouse would be these hippie Americans asking Alice all sorts of weird and political questions.
My spot illustrations were some “EAT ME” pills and a groovy letter M.
Thanks for stopping by! :)
