Candid and civil moments between Democrats and Republicans are a rare sight for most people who turn on the television these days. However, it is daily occurrence at the Arkansas House.
Camaraderie between members not only helps to advance substantial legislation, it is healthy for democracy.
The Arkansas House Communications team has worked hard to create a transparency between the 100 members who serve in the Arkansas House of Representatives and their constituency. Our efforts include joining them on the on the floor of the House Chamber to photograph them in the legislative process.
These photographs put faces to the names the people of Arkansans read about in their newspaper or hear about over the radio. They help the public realize that these legislators are mothers, fathers, doctors, lawyers, farmers and friends. Seeing a human side to public service, we hope it sends a message that they too can serve their community and state.
We know that when the average American thinks about government they may immediately think of the President, Congress, or perhaps picture the sprawling monuments in Washington DC. By creating a following on social media, our photos serve to remind the public that local government also has a direct impact on their day to day lives.
We post the photos along with a summary of the day’s proceedings in the legislature. Members will share these posts with their constituency. The candid images then lend to conversations between members and their constituents.
