Genius Loci - Projection Mapping

In the traditional Roman religion, a Genius Loci was a protective spirit of a place. Today, it's more like a location's distinctive atmosphere or the "spirit of place." Rather than necessarily a guardian spirit, but pervading spirits.

Over one semester studying in basic techniques of Projection Mapping with visual artist, Bryan Clendenen, this project had been completed in the spring of 2018. Everything from concept, technologies, projection, and site considerations was discussed and critiqued during the semester.
BACKGROUND

Here, the back alley of ISU Design on Main locates in the Main Street Cultural District in downtown Ames. The building of ISU Design on Main was built in 1869, and then started to house graduate studios and classes in Graphic Design, IVA, Sustainable Environments and Urban Design since 2012, as well as a large community gallery.
CONCEPT

The first level houses a large amount of graduates students and their ambitious visions inside, which I created a visual setting that the building was a giant automatic machine to absorb artistic spirits in the daytime and enliven the space at night.

Animated patterns filled the utility meters, wires, and pipes, mapping them into colorful designs. To fit into the growing trends of motion design as a new form to show characteristics and contents which within the expression of the functioning.

Interpreting the energy of the place, I picked electronic music from Moderat called "A New Error." It's mind-blowing, which well helped the concept deliver a feeling of enlivened experience.
