Alter-verse Oz
An Interview with Dorothy Gale
The American classic, The Wizard of Oz, is a cultural touchstone.  Many people know the 1938 movie by heart, and have deep connections to the characters and the symbology of the story.

This ongoing personal project encompasses several goals for me.  First and foremost is the opportunity to develop my digital painting skills and simply practice the process of illustration.  Secondly, it's an opportunity for me to practice conceptualization for both images and storytelling.

Lastly, I was attracted to the quirkiness of diving into a more mature, "alternate universe" re-telling of the tale through a mock interview with a dowager Dorothy Gale as she tells the truth behind Mr. Baum's telling of her story.  The characters are almost the same, but different events unfolded and sometimes even characters from other stories found themselves bumbling into the magical Land of Oz.

Included below you'll see my rough drawing/conceptual thumbnails for each image, and some character illustrations that I developed in their own files so I could use them again in other illustrations.

These pieces were all completed on an iPad Pro.
