Where Whale Sharks and Conservation Intersect

The founder of Roja Earth Productions, Neela Eyunni is a filmmaker, author, and journalist whose work focuses on conservation. Neela Eyunni produced, wrote, and narrated the documentary On the Brink: Uncharted Waters, which investigated the whale shark tourism industry in the Philippines. She also wrote the accompanying article entitled, Is the Whale Shark Tourism Industry Conservation or Exploitation?

The article reveals the complexities of the whale shark tourism industry that has become one of the predominant sources of livelihood of the local fishermen in Oslob, Cebu in the Philippines. In Oslob, the tourism trade brought economic relief to individuals who rarely had access to education or healthcare services. However, the burgeoning success of the whale shark tourism threatens the survival of these wild animals. Some of the practices that are posing major threats to the sharks' health include excessive feeding to draw them closer to boats and leaving them unprotected from poachers.

The article concludes with a call for economic diversification in places like Oslob to take some pressure off of whale sharks. It also states that tighter regulations need to be placed and enforced on the whale shark tourism industry. Additionally, people can make the most difference by hiring ethically- and sustainability-minded whale shark tour operators and observing proper protocols, such as those found among the locals in Donsol, Sorsogon in the southern peninsula of the Luzon Island. Donsol only operates six months a year and has a ban on feeding the sharks.
