Flatland: A Romance Of Many Dimensions
Artists' Book Design
For our second 'Final Major Project', we were set the task of re-designing either Chapter 10 or 16, from Edwin A. Abbott's original 1884 novella, "Flatland, a Romance of Many Dimensions". After a vast experimental process - exploring a range of artists, styles and themes - I decided to produce a concertina book, designed to incorporate elements of both legible and illegible text. All of the illustrations within the book have been created using the text matter alone, with the aid 'Photoshop CC' and 'Illustrator'. The dimensions of the book are 200mm X 200mm. The book itself incorporates the use of two main colours - black and white, with the subtle use of red on the front of the page.

Selection Of Designs From My Experimental Process
The images below highlight some of the illegible text experiments that I conducted throughout the duration of this project. These were created using 'printer scanning' and by using Photoshop CC's 'liquify' tools - distorting the text matter even further.
Final Book Design - InDesign Grid Layout
The images below show the final book design (using InDesign CC to create a grid layout for printing). Within these images, it is clear to see that the text matter has been re-formatted in two main ways - with the intention of creating both legible and illegible elements within the book. This book has been created to work as a set, alongside the other chapters within the book.
