Gula : Gluttony
Pigs are intelligent and most of the times used to represent gluttony.
Dante even mentions his friend Ciacco (may be shortened version of "Giacomo," - a pig or hog in a derogatory way back in those days.)

Avaritia : Greed
It's punishment is said to be boiled alive in really good olive oil

Luxuria : Luxury
Desire to obtain more money, food, power, fame, and/or sex.

Acedia : Sloth
Sloth was not only laziness, but also lack of spiritual connection with God and Christian faith.

Ira : Wrath
Because wrath involves internal and external anger, suicide, as a punishment, was seen adequate.

Invidia : Envy
The punishment for the envious is to have their eyes sewn shut with wire because they have gained sinful pleasure from seeing others brought low.
