ASU Library New Year Card, 2018-2019

Unfolding through space and time.

"We are all different," said the late theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking. "There is no such thing as a standard human being, but we share the same human spirit."

In the spirit of Hawking and his inspired defense of humanity, the 2018 Arizona State University Library holiday card featured an array of intricate patterns found in nature and the universe, flung through space and time, along with Hawking's reassuring words, as we looked ahead to a new year.
The card's stunning display of diversity, a layered mélange of laser-cut designs, each different, illuminates what we as a public university and academic library hold as our most central value and greatest measure of success: inclusion. The New Year's greeting, sent throughout the university, was widely applauded as a stand-out piece in a sea of circulating holiday cards – drawing the attention and praise of a number of top-level administrators, including the dean of design and the arts who was compelled to share the card with artist and ASU partner James Turrell.
The card's 'wormhole' provides a viewing portal through which the other card panels can be experienced differently, and its bright copper foil a nod to Arizona's place and history.
In accordion-like fashion, the card is opened and revealed. The opening allows for an experience of unfolding, panel by panel, for each user–a slow, individual process of discovery.
