Fake Movie Posters - Song Titles Edition: Vol. 1

Fake Movie Posters:
Song Titles Edition – VOLUME 1

In early summer of 2018, I had an itch. An urge. A need.

It morphed into the desire to explore and exercise my design mind – designing and illustrating Fake Movie Posters.

Since I was very young, I have always loved Movies and Music. Constantly quoting both (though quoting movies definitely sounded better than me trying to quote music), and not only enjoying the end product, but also the design intertwined with it. CD and DVD Covers, Movie and Concert Posters, T-Shirts, etc. My brother and I were obsessed – and eventually, I knew I had to learn how to design/illustrate for the Music & Film Industry, while he went on to study at Point Park University for Acting and Theater; working as an actor for the stage and film.

During (and after graduating from) college, I began to heavily focus my freelance career on music and musicians – with a few movie/film/tv scattered with it as well (check out my experience here) – especially on illustrations for concert posters at Stage AE. Literally dozens of posters, with hundreds of hours and carpal tunnel in-between. After I felt I’d accomplished what I wanted to with it, I cut off all freelance, posters, etc. for nearly five years to focus on growing within ocreations. Going from entry-level graphic designer to senior designer, to now Art Director, I am literally working at my dream job in my dream career. (Side note: Looking to bring your brand to life? Looking for fresh and expert creativity for your business? Get in touch with me at ocreations!)

But, to be a good designer and art director, you’ve gotta keep up on current brands, designers, etc. as well as your own skills. I wanted to continue honing in on my craft and go back to my roots with Movie/TV Poster Design. With a few small projects in the works, I felt I needed to explore on my own, which brings us here.

Personal Goals
My biggest goal from this is completing these designs within a day or two while using different techniques via Photoshop and Illustrator.
Less overtly conceptual, and more on unique ways to compose a poster using the software in different ways.

A few of these posters start off with wanting to learn a specific (or several specific) techniques and how to utilize them within the composition and don’t start with any concept in mind. Most of these posters have no beginning or end in sight until I finally find the right mood and movement.

Some, though, do start with a song title that I want to design around. “Spaceman” and “Empty Spaces” both started with the song title in mind before designing. On the other hand, while I was designing “Unheavenly Creatures”, I didn’t have a song in mind at all.

In some of the posters, you’ll also see “taglines”. I grabbed out lyrics from the actual song to drive home the movie poster feel. Added bonus :)
Side Note: The “Actor Names” are, of course, fake. As goes with the movie poster credits. Each poster does have what the artist sings the song. I.E.: “Save Me From LA • A Fefe Dobson Song"

My thoughts behind the processes vary – for example:

•  “The End of All Things” purposes were to test out other text effects along with glitching.
•  “The Hunter” was more design focused – combining dozens of photos into one full composition to tell more of a visual story with movement and hierarchy.
•  “Save Me From LA” and “Spaceman” were both focused on incorporating different design techniques along with a focus on typography effects – heavily exploring adjustments and interesting color correcting, manipulation, etc.

Enjoy! And, visit again for new posters!
