Courbex: Concrete Chair

Courbex

Made to incorporate functionality as well as aesthetics.  The inspiration for the design emerged from the free flowing and infinite feeling of the ocean.  Made from a simple concrete mixture, with metal re-bar as a skeletal support, Courbex is a durable, all-weather chair.  After much research and the completion of the design sketches, the necessary materials were gathered for construction.  The next step was constructing a form from the concrete to take shape in from wood studs and cardboard.  The concrete was then poured and set for twenty four hours.  The chair is 5'8" x 1'6" x 2', weighing 540 lbs, making it one of the heaviest chairs. The group won "most comfortable" chair in the competition. 'Courbex, designed to support the curvature of the human spine, provides comfortable seating without straining one's body.'
