Reconsidering urban planning

Examining contemporary urbanism- no longer a discreetly discipline- based centralist planning, but a "field" of multiple coincident, interactive disciplines that blur conventional areas of experise, and operate at various scales.  Such terms challenge the stasis of architectural objects favouring looser, dynamic relational networks.

The process of understanding the city of Venice began with trips to the site and neighboring streets, which were bustling with culture and energy. As the prototype for the project were the Souks of Beirut by Stan Allen, the main concept was to identify the key components of the city: culture, social elements and living spaces, that would be necessary to wave into a Mat building. The living elements were the smallest component, a house is divided amongst three people; the three houses are then attached to a kitchen to share and two of these clusters are attached to a living space. Three of these housing, kitchen, living space clusters are connected around an outdoor space to complete a community. This community was strategically placed on the site to allow flow of citizens and pedestrians. The final product creates a long woven thread that connects the beach front to the canal systems.
