Truman's Computer

※ This video is best viewed in portrait view.

This is a short video that reconstructs the movie "The Truman Show" on a virtual computer screen. The GUI of the Windows 98 OS is borrowed to represent the 90's mood of "The Truman Show,” which was released in 1998. The video was made in the portrait ratio of a smartphone screen (360 x 640 pixels) so that the viewers can be maximally absorbed in the experience as if they are using Truman’s computer themselves or peeking at his screen.

The video starts with Truman’s booting the computer in ‘safe mode’, who used to be allowed access to restricted information (~3:20). By an unknown error, he realizes that his whole life has been a sham, “The Truman Show”, which leads him to exit the screen whereupon the movie ends.

From the beginning of the video to 3:20, the parts of the film controlled by an unknown manager (background, blue screen) are in blue. The blue color symbolizes ‘LIES that pretend to be safe.’ Just as if Windows OS claims to provide a secure environment but always throws ‘blue screens of death.’ Also, it is related to Truman’s water phobia that the producer of the show induces on him by sudden drowning of his father in order to prevent him from leaving the island, which is the show set.

In the contrary, when Truman faces the truth, the error screen turns red. The red color symbolizes ‘dangerous TRUTH.’ The glitches appearing in between frames are also in red, which seem like errors but are in fact the truth that Truman should face.

Thank you for watching. Good afternoon, good evening and good night!
