RSA awards / moving pictures
brief
This was an RSA Awards competition brief called Moving Pictures. I had to create a one minute animation that illuminated the subject discussed in the soundbite. I chose to create an animation to the soundbite ‘Everyday Sexism’ by Laura Bates.

concept
The concept for the animation is that it takes you through a day in the life of a woman as she experiences catcalling in the street, sexual harassment on public transport and being belittled in the workplace. The final scene is the beginning of the next day where the same sexist behaviour occurs all over again to highlight how monotonous and repetitive experiences of sexism are in a women’s life. The animation is designed to be one continuous camera shot to reflect going through the motions of daily life.
character design
The same body base shape was used for both the female and male characters. This is so that the female character is not defined by her figure. She has purposefully been designed to not be what society views as conventionally attractive. She represents that sexism happens to all women. Another version of the main character in different clothes had to be illustrated to show when it is the next day.
background design
The backgrounds for the animation were very wide illustrations so that the camera could pan horizontally. Two versions of the street were created: a nice winter morning and a horrible rainy morning. This is a metaphor for the effect of constant normalised sexism.
