mcMB - micro cities [in] Macro Buildings

mcMB is the manifesto of abandoned industrial spaces regeneration. Its purpose is to fullfill the voids created by society's hectic development which resulted in the gargantuan industrial monsters - made of steel and concrete - we see in the outskirts of our cities. The pilot project is applied to the Olivetti factory in Marcianise's ASI area, being this one of many buildings with a peculiar aestethic and landscaping interest. The building is - de facto - one of those italian architecture masterpieces built during the “economic boom” as products of ambitious political, industrial and financial investments which resulted in the most advanced architectural and engineering research for the time. The factory with its a 63.000 square meters footprint - bigger than the infamous "Albergo dei Poveri in Naples" - is a “phalanstery”, a huge edifice swarming with tenants organized according to Charles Fourier definition. The abandonment of this place is magnified by its colossal dimensions and represents a murder whose perpetrator is today’s society that keeps on building shopping centers. By switching the watcher perspective from machine to "human perspective" the structure assumes the features of a "Place" more than a building because of its elephantine dimentions. It is place of itself, it's container and content at the same time therefore the proposal concerns the space's purposeful reappropriation by founding a micro-city, a community of artists and conscious people whom are aware of the potential value that even a simple piece of iron ore can have. According to Guy Debord the “show” being the main part of contemporary society is responsible for the loss of inviduality, personality and human creativity, is the cause of human alienation and the ultimate reason that drives the man away from a free devolopment of his natural capabilities. In this context the Art in the most pure way represents the only escape one has from the conformation and nullification of the ego. Art is the beating heart of the city and the only spare time activity, hence the city represents a contemporary alhambra, a network of spatially indipendent organisms that aggregates in a single internal landscape. The Purpose is to create unique situations, defined as moments of life deliberately and concretely built through the collective organization of a unitary envionment and a “game of events”. These situations are created trough a new spatial environment of activity in which integral art and a new architecture can finally bind together. This situationism proposes to invent games of a new essence, expanding the non-mediocre part of life, diminishing - as far as possible - the null moments and thus highlighting the idea of the revolutionary potential of free time. The symbol of this building as the crystallization of a utopia is seen in the colossal work that houses at its center: the "flying man" who in a Nietzschean key responds to the most desecrating burning man of the Nevada by relaunching the man-artist as a myth-icarus. Art makes free.
