Skates - Project 4 Animation

For this short film I wanted to showcase insight into my hopeless romantic side, as well as my love for frame by frame animation. This style of animation is very close to my heart, because it is what originally peaked my interest in pursuing animation as a career. Both Duet by Glen Keane and Thought of You by Ryan Woodward, pictured below, were major inspirations for the short film I created. Additionally, with all the sentimental value they hold in my life, they also tell a universal story that almost anyone can adore, and that was exactly my goal in creating this. I wanted to make something that anyone could relate to and find enjoyable.

Design Choices
One of my main goals in this project, was to work smarter and not harder, and my use of technology definitely helped. By doing simple drawings on a solid background, with a gradient, I tried to get your eye to focus on more of what was happening in the foreground instead of the background. Additionally to the simplistic art style, I wanted the characters to have somewhat of a continuous movement so you weren't taken out of the story. Then by using different types of music and sound effects I wanted to make it so the music pulled you deeper into the story instead of out of it. Using all these different techniques, it allowed me to show not only my passion for animation but also a developed story. Also, I utilized facial expressions and line weight to present more emotion within an image.
Technology
In this project, I wanted to really dive deeper into technology that I haven't really explored as much as some of the other Adobe Creative Cloud Apps. So that led me to decide to utilize Photoshop and Premiere to create my animation workflow, both of which I didn't really touch in my two years in my multimedia class at the Center for Advanced Research and Technology.
Photoshop
When I decided to do a frame by frame animation I had to find the right tool for the job. Ultimately Photoshop ended up being heavily involved in my animation workflow. As I began to animate I utilized the photoshop video timeline to place all my layers into the correct order to form animated sequences. Then I exported the files and placed them into Premiere.
Premiere Pro
After I decided that Premiere Pro would be where I compiled all my animated scenes, I had to dive deeper into the program to discover how to make it look like it did in my head. First off, I imported all of my animated scenes from Photoshop and placed them in the correct sequential order. Then I began to layer my audio. By first taking the songs and making them sound as though they were being played on a record player with the use of sound effects. As I delved further into my soundscape, I layered many sound effects and ambiance noise to give off a feel that the music was just background noise compared to everything that was happening. In the final stage, I went through and added transitions to the audio and the animated clips to give a seamless feel.
Illustrator and After Effects
I used my old friends Illustrator and After Effects to do my logo work. I created the Skates Logo using the line tool and a textured brush to draw the skate. Additionally, I used, with my friend Alyssa's help, text and shapes for the AK Studios. Which I then put into After Effects, and put a slight animation on.
