M O S H O  :  The Renaissance
CalArts Graphic Design Program Motion Show 2019

M O S H O is the year-end Motion Graphics Design showcase at California Institute of the Arts. A team of students curate and produce the annual Motion Show, which features student made motion design pieces created throughout the year. Students, faculty, and recruiters gather in the Bijou Theater for a night of kooky, wild, and breathtaking visual work. This years theme: The Renaissance

01  :  Composite & Illustrate Portraits

Interstitials are the back bone of the MoSho. They are used to introduce the students before their motion pieces are shown on screen.

The very first step to create this concept was to photograph every student, re-illustrate their face, and combine them into the painting they were assigned to.

The second step was to grab each art piece, separate elements, and re-composite them so that each one fits the 1920 x 1080 frame.

Artworks include: Napoleon Crossing The Alps, The Last Supper, American Gothic, Beethoven, Statue of David, The Skater, Creation of Adam, Mona Lisa, etc.

02  :  Typography Treatment

Custom styled typography was used for the names of each student. Typeface used was Louize Display by 205 Type Foundry, which was then processed with texture using Cinema 4D.  Classic William Morris Art Nouveau letter forms were used for the main title typography.

03  :  Voice Recording & Mapping

Each student was giving a piece of dialogue that we created for each scene, which we then recorded using Garage Band.

To create the mouth animation, we used a classic Kitschy Lo-Fi Mouth Animation to easily map out and keyframe the audio of the student speaking.

04  :  Final Animation

Once all assets were established, it was time for animation. Most paintings were separated and split using After Effects 3D layer separations for a dynamic and hyper-realistic feel.
