I took it upon myself to design 12 unique icons that were part of a themed set. Due to my current interest in Dungeons and Dragons, I decided to choose that as my theme as I designed the icons. The project consisted of three portions; sketching, drafting, and completion of the project.
The first step in my process was creating sketches of various items from the lore of Dungeons and Dragons. There were many items and symbols I could have used including swords, potions, shields, wands, spellbooks, monsters, armor etc. I found that sketching on paper was particularly difficult for me which lead me to switch to graph paper. Designing became more smoothly afterwards.
After completing the sketching phase, I decided on which items I would design for this project,
1) Potion Bottles x 3
5) Knight's Helmet
6) Ink Bottle
9) Bow and Arrow
It took me several days to complete the concepts using Adobe Illustrator. As you can see, my earlier drafts included using gradients and strokes to design my products. However, I ultimately decided on using simple colors rather than gradients, and no strokes at all for my vectors.
After 13 days of continuous drafting, sketching, outlining, and drawing, I successfully completed my first art/ graphic design icon set with a Dungeons and Dragons theme. Hopefully this will be the first of many other projects yet to come.
