Marianne Brandt - Artbook

Project type: book design | Topic: Marianne Brandt, Bauhaus | Consultants: Tamas Marcell, Peter Bence Simon | photos: Bazsi Szentesi
In this project, my aim was to take a deeper look into the life and work of Marianne Brandt, once the leader of the Bauhaus Metal Workshop, artist and designer. Brandt was a very strong woman, in fact the only woman to ever graduate from the school's metalwork workshop. However, deep down, she was a very sensitive soul. This quality of her spirit was hidden away for many-many years, because she had to stay strong in a man-dominated field, like metalwork. Later on her photo-montages were revealed to the public, in the form of an exhibition, and the true depth of her sensitive soul was shown.

With the book I wanted to show these ambivalent qualities of her. Her working with metal, as well as her being a very delicate person. So I came up with the idea of using a metal-like material (a mirror foil), emulate the style of her deeply personal photo-montages with the composition I created for the cover, including her initials and the teapot she became known for. On the pages, looking through her life, I used the same method, to emulate the thought process and the build of her compositions, giving the text a very experimental interpretation: you can either follow the text line by line, or jump between the lines following shapes and arrows. I created a custom typeface to set the headings in, to elevate the look of the book.
