Advanced Typographic Practice

The ILA is publishing a series of short stories to encourage people to read. These will be distributed to Libraries and issued free of charge. Choose one of the accompanying short stories and interpret it typographically. Your aim is to draw the reader into the story and make the reading an enjoyable and immersive experience.

For this project, I had chosen The Cartographer Wasps and the Anarchist Bees short story. I wanted to recreate this story through a book by using my typographic practice to entice the viewer into reading the whole story and becoming interested in what was being told. I have produced a small book sizing at 12.5cm in length and 7cm width. I wanted to recreate the feel of The Little Red book to help interpret the colonialism theme within the book itself.

Using 200gsm cream card and distressing the edges I hope to produce a handmade appearance, as if the wasps have created this book themselves. I felt driven to use as many graphic elements I could that summarises the overall theme of China, bees and of course wasps. I had wanted to combine these continuing matters throughout the book as it is indicated continuously throughout the story.
