Sommerles.no is an annual summer reading campaign held in Norway, for children in classes 1 to 7. It is undertaken in partnership with libraries all over the country from June to end of August, with children from over 370 municipalities participating to make the campaign a rousing success. I contribute to the project in conceptualization, character design, background illustration, website design, typography, and other visual design work.

Every year, Sommerles also releases an exclusive story for the participants to unlock weekly and win achievements from a quiz based on it. This story revolves around the adventures of Astrid and Asbjorne, whose characters are based off of Norse mythology. A new theme is chosen for this story and surrounding visuals each year. For 2018, the theme was a journey into galaxies, chasing the Norse god Loki who stole all of humanity’s knowledge of outer space. I also conceptualize chapter illustrations and design key items for this story.

For the 2018 leg of the campaign, I made designs for a bandana, poster, paper bookmarks, magnetic bookmarks, wristbands, keyrings and other small gifts, Facebook advertisements, flyers etc. all of which featured the character designs. Aside from the usual things, we also tried to conceptualize a simple platformer game, for which I provided character assets, backgrounds and other graphics to the game devs.

In addition to the illustrations and visual designs, I also worked on UI design for the website. The layout for most pages was retained from 2017, and elements from the space themed designs were incorporated into it. Building up from the existing design, I added further detail to the graphical elements while still maintaining the Sommerles visual style and essence.

We also drew detailed chapter header images for the accompanying story.

This year, we also designed a new logo for Sommerles. The theme for Sommerles has always revolved around Yggdrasil (the World Tree of norse mythology) and books, and so I made sure to incorporate both images into a logo that best suits the demographic that we work for. This is the logo that goes on all printables and digital materials.
