The Foreigner is a magazine that speaks to the Westernized Asian identity with a focus in creating a community through sharing relatable moments. Told through stories, interviews, and illustrations, the magazine explores the constant struggle of trying to occupy both Western and Eastern societies at once. This first issue focuses on the theme of belonging and highlights the difficulties of trying to belong to certain groups in our communities. Ultimately, the feeling of being a foreigner never leaves our minds no matter where we go, but being a foreigner doesn't have to be a bad thing.

Inspired by popular Facebook Group, Subtle Asian Traits, this project aimed to capture the essence of this unique community into a playful, printed magazine. Each section of The Foreigner was created to evoke different emotions and levels of seriousness as a way to create a space for deeper insight into what defines the Westernized Asian identity. By using a wide variety of illustration styles to tell these stories, a more playful tone could be achieved, but it also allowed deeper meanings to be added and questioned upon throughout the magazine.
