2010 | Lake swimming center, Varese, Italy

The landscape that borders the lake of Varese is characterized by a wide and thick forest area that extends perpendicular to the lake and its marsh, punctuated by the realization of wide clearings that open deep views from the road to the
pool of water.
The main idea of this project is to relate to the territory, creating a new water landscape, a “swimming park”, informed by the characteristics of transparency and level planeing.
The building is organized in two levels, that interact with each other: the first level is the water level, the second one is the terraces. The water level consists of six swimming pools placed at different heights and used for various sports activities, it can be crossed in its full size only by athletes who can enjoy the surrounding landscape to 360 degrees. The space is completely opened to water during summer months, while during winter just one sector is water accessible, which consists of three swimming pools. The terraces level consists of bleachers from which is possible to watch competitions, and of a bar/restaurant and services for athletes. The living roof, supported by stairs block that allow the lift in the building, has closed sides and the visibility is limited to the pool level, while the sky is visible through the skylights opened on the perimeter of the roof at the outdoor courtyards. Dissecting the roof, it can be seen that, combining the component of light with the right angle of the ter- races, it is given a form that makes it look like emerging from the ground and at the same time floating.
