Tales from Spectrum Annual Book Design

Spectrum are the leading source of news and expert opinion on autism research. Tales of Spectrum is the annual book published by Spectrum filled with research and discoveries over the last 12 months. This years book is the special 10th anniversary edition that takes a look at the evolution of autism science over the last decade.

The design of the book was informed by two key ideas within autism research; camouflage and detail focus. Camouflage refers to someone with autism both unintentionally or intentionally blending in with their peers. Within the design of the cover a face is camouflaged alongside the number 10 in reference to Spectrums anniversary. The second theme is inspired by the way those with autism process the world – detail oriented focus. Small details are examined individually at first which eventually build up to an understanding of the bigger picture. This idea was depicted in the graphic elements. Each fragment of the cover illustration was separated and portrayed individually – which invites the reader to examine each shape on its own.
