American Red Cross Emergency Preparedness
Publication Series
Envisioned as a 15-publication series of emergency preparedness documents on best practices developed by the American Red Cross’s Tsunami Recovery Program, the publications would be divided into three types, depending on the intended audience. All publications were to use the same cover scheme of a figurative conceptual illustration and a color block for title placement. The interior layouts would all use a similar design aesthetic.
“Partner Management Guidelines” was classified as a ‘manual’ because it was for use by headquarters staff, as well as staff in the field. The biggest design challenge was to clearly organize a variety of information types, including chapter openings, chapter summaries, chapter sections, chapter section summaries, chapter subsections, sidebar boxes, case studies, charts, tables, photos, captions, and extensive annexes. The main book of the “Partner Management Guidelines” has 178 pages and the annexes have 219 pages.
“Donor Intent” was classified as a ‘white paper’ because it was only for use by headquarters staff, to give them insight into policy and the decision making process. White paper content is not complex. There are no chapter, sections, summaries or even photos. Therefore, the challenge was to still bring some variety and interest to the pages. That was accomplished by adding client-selected call outs to the sidebar and treating these in a bold and colorful typographic style.
Below are PDFs of Partnership Management Guidelines and Donor Intent. If you download the files, you can view them in 'spreads' as if you were flipping through the book.
