DESIGN FICTION + HUMANITARIAN FUTURES

This project was created as part of a workshop on Humanitarian Futures by Quicksand. Speculative future visions were made to tell the story of humanitarian aid in India during a water crisis in 2030.

STORY STATEMENT

Telling the story of a group of a sanitation engineers aiming to develop a sustainable outlaw community around a step-well in a world that is on the brink of ruin due to pollution and radioactive waste in the water and soil.
The world, as we know it, is almost in ruins as nuclear and radioactive waste pollute the water and soil. A sanitation engineer, one among a group of outlaws, realizes that the production of nuclear power places a huge strain on water resources; one that no one is paying attention to as the need for nuclear power spreads. They try to spread the message through art and posters but, those are easily overpowered by advertisements of nuclear power. As a proactive solution, the outlaws begin to create a self-sustaining community around a step well, storing resources and planning for the future. The engineer designs and builds machinery that will allow them to purify their own water and cultivate on the land around the well.
