Challenge: Phase one: to update The Athletic Shield and standalone Hendrix "H" used by Athletics. The original shield logo was too busy and looked like a conglomeration of multiple logos and word marks. The "H" logo looked more like a roman numeral 2, which some people thought meant we were in division II sports.

Phase two: to move away from using a human warrior and  towards a non-human symbol. Part of the reason for this requirement was that Hendrix College strives for diversity and inclusion, and Brave Heart is not diverse or inclusive. An additional issue with the human version of a warrior was difficulty and expense to embroider the details.

Role:
For phase one, I simplified the athletic shield to make it look more consistent with the
College's shield, while decluttering the Hendrix "H". In phase two, the
input from focus groups on campus was to focus on warrior themes, such as a sword, shield, or helmet. I chose a warrior's helmet that was edgy and simplified. I incorporated a reference element from the old logo: split painted face in making the helmet half orange and half black (the College's colors).

The President's Office and the Athletics Department were thrilled with the solutions for both phases. The coaches and students especially loved the new helmet. They felt it was a symbol that would represent them well in the conference and would appeal to future Warriors. The new shield and "H" were implemented in August 2018. The new athletic symbol (the warrior helmet) was revealed to the student athletes on January 2019.
