Paper Doll: Trinity the Triangle

PAPER DOLL: Trinity the Triangle
The project was to create an original character to be used as a paper doll. It could have multiple outfits and accessories and even a backstory. The main objective for this project was to be original, creative, and to have fun.

I started coming up with humanoid characters because it's something that I'm used to. However, this class has beckoned me to try things out of my comfort zone. I wanted to come up with something different so I thought of animals, things in nature like trees or rocks, and clouds. I couldn't think of anything unique or worthwhile to do with those. My mind then went back to basics and I started just thinking of shape. I then decided to use a triangle because, to me, it's the most visually striking of the geometric shapes and it's a shape that has a lot of creative possibilities. I wanted to give this triangle personality and wit. That is why she is named Trinity and has such a shift in costume change.

I built this character in Adobe Illustrator. I started by building her base body and shading it in on my first layer. I then locked that first layer and drew in her first outfit on a separate layer. I did the same thing for the second outfit. After all of that was done I unlocked the layers, I selected everything and scaled it down a little so it would be able to fit onto an 8.5x11" sized document. I then used the space I had left at the bottom to put her name on the document.

I learned a lot from this project. I learned the base design of the paper doll needs to be at the forefront of your thought process so that you can create appropriate attire for the doll and so that the doll can stand up on its own. This project had a quick turn around that was challenging so it taught me how you time management should always be present. The last thing this project taught me was to not be afraid to get weird and think outside of the box.
