5. landscape
5.1.current existing landscape problems
5.2. new project landscape concept.

1. Learning
1.1 open spaces
The design of the building based on the open spaces and transparency which afford the sight continuity which give a comfort and impatient feelings
1.2. double height spaces
used to give a continuous and good lighted spaces .double height spaces are recommended for library and social area.
1.3 indoor green
the library is designed with a lot of indoor green to decrease the co2 imitation , which influence the ability of learning
1.4. outdoor generation
the new generation of children are named as indoor generation which means that they stays most of their time indoor which affect their ability to learn.
so the library is designed as mixed mode building which opens to outdoor when possible and switch to HVAC system when ventilation can afford thmal comfort according to schedule.
this schedule had been made by designer according to comfort hours in ALJOUF climate file.
2. Community engagement
2.1. Entrance
Entrance should achieve the target of the project which represented in integration between old and new, As it kept the old façade of the old hall and adding new modern style represented in the glass wall, Water curtains and Plants around the hall in a cylindrical shape.
Entrance direct the user to the building where the main library or to the left to the administrative space and the stair of the women's library and the children's library in the end of the path.
2.2.The court (library as your home)
The design based on the inner courtyard in the middle of the library which simulate the old Arabic home (The courtyard is the is the heart of the space which collects all the library visitors and achieve the idea of communication
Separate: Separating the different use spaces spatially and connecting them visually.
Privacy: Connecting the spaces with the courtyard by spatial relations achieving the privacy and it is a relationship between Privacy & Attaching to space.
Noise quiet: The courtyard is the main source of the noise and the noise level decreases gradually whenever we move away from it horizontally or vertically or by architectural element which controls spaces hierarchy which as reading steps, handrail, Glazed wall, Moving Mashrabia, Closed wall.
Continuity: Vertical space continuity to increase the connectivity between the spaces.
3. Contribution to archeological issue.
1.1.Building material used
the material used in building from the surrounding environment , the design used bricks to make thermal mass.
1.2.Façade patterns
the design use a pattern looks like the old library and from the Islamic heritage
1.3.Preservation of heritage library
the design built the concept on preserving the old library and landscape as it is a heritage building from 1963.
4. Sustainable aspect
1.1.Mixed mode building strategy
the building ventilation strategy based on switching between natural ventilation and HVAC.
1.2.Thermal mass (material)
the building used a double skin with first layer of bricks with openings to afford natural ventilation and an air gap with green vegetation, and a glass facade with movable windows to afford ventilation when possible. the double skin afford an insulation from outdoor .
1.3.Schedule ventilation.
1.4.ventilation strategy.
based to catch air from west south facade ( facade of prevailing wind) from opening in pattern , from wind catcher upward then air is sucking by the opening in atrium which is exposed to sun light.
1.5.Lighting
lighting is designed as indirect light from north and reflected from light shelves in facade pattern and reflected by the building roof .
1.6.Co2emissions
the green vegetation is used indoor and outdoor to decrease co2 emmition.
5. Landscape
5.1. current existing landscape problems:
5.1.1. unwelcoming to move through.
5.1.2. no outdoors reading , meet and exploit .
5,1.3. no attraction spots to motivate walkers to walk around.
5.2. new project landscape concept:
5.2.1. Environmental aspects: Due to Aljouf’s hot climate the design achieve maximum green area to absorb radiation and decrease heat gain.
The palm trees take more than 10 years to grow
The new landscape preserve 90% of the site’s original trees and palms.
Contouring like curves are created to move smoothly between and around .
Microclimate control noise and wind speed, reduce dust in site and decrease temperature.
5.2.2.parking design
the parking areas are divided into three zones:
500 sq. m on east between library and mosque to serve both.
future underground parking on east side with area of 2500 sq. m
1000 sq. m on west to serve administration staff.
using cool reflective pavements to decrease heat gain.
5.2.3. water cycle
Aljouf city is known for heavy rain in winter, some areas are chosen to be rain gardens to store rainwater underground to improve water quality, exploit it in Irrigation and usethe aesthetic and environmental aspect of integrating water in hot arid climates.
5.2.4. social aspects:
open campus to serve the community by Encourage visitors to enjoy outdoor learning experiences in public outdoor garden.
contouring curves to create a relaxing feeling that the library is hugged by nature.
Several elements of landscape design are considered to enhance pedestrians’ experience such as
(1) creating several focal points (Open Theatre zone, The Round Plaza, The siting curves and Agriculture workshop zone).
(2) incorporating several forms of vegetation as an aesthetic view .
(3)On the eastern side, a wide area of the parking is covered with green shade as a green view for the library and outdoor reading space.
a place of mountains, Zubal Castle, It has a surrounding wall built of mud and stone decorated with mud engravings.
