"Heart of Gold" Screenprinted Tote Bag
This post walks through the process of creating my screenprinted bag from start to finish. First, here is a digital mockup next to the real thing!
Class Project Objective: You will create a one color hand crafted, custom lettered screen printed design using either Photoshop, Illustrator or Adobe CC Mobile apps on the iPad. You will be introduced to what makes a good apparel design. You will evaluate several typographic solutions, learn the steps to creating a design for screen printing as well as being responsible for creating a unique, well thought out type design of your own.
For this graphic design project, I first decided to emulate vintage lettering styles by shaping a phrase into a circle. I thought that this would be a good challenge, especially as I drew the letters.
My initial sketches:
At first, I found a swirly vintage font and tried to trace the letters and fit them together.
I soon changed direction and instead tried hand lettering from scratch on Adobe Draw for iPad. I was a bit nervous at first, but it turned out to be a lot easier. Below are progress pictures from throughout the drawing and editing process.
After I had refined the letterforms, I brought my design into Adobe Illustrator on the desktop and simplified the shapes.
I cleaned up the letterforms and made my design black so that it could be used to expose the screen for printing.
This is the finished and printed design! A few of my (very kind) friends printed the bags for me.
Mockup links are in the description. Thank you for your interest!
