Paper Engineering in Packaging Design

 

ABSTRACT

The visual aspect of packaging design plays a big role in determining the visceral reactions of the audiences. Often times, the visual manifestation of the package relates to the habits, behaviors, cultures and personalities of the audience. As a result, the eye-grabbing visuals of the package may overshadow its conceptual intent. Paper engineering is the combination of folding and cutting on paper products. Introducing paper engineering into packaging design may be a way to bridge the disconnection between the surface design and the conceptual intention behind the packaging. Packaging represents the brand and the product while capturing the attention of consumers. Packaging not only establishes a connection between designers and consumers but also seeks a balance between being environmentally friendly and enhancing the appearance of a product. Paper engineering can fulfill the sustainability of packaging design while maintain its role in promoting a product. Therefore, paper engineering methodology should be widely adopted by the packaging industry.
