🤲🏾 “Force Quit” ⌨️💣
a piece about the tech industry’s complicitness in the development of tools and/or weapons that are meant to kill people. i was thinking about what it means to be complicit in the things you claim to hate, & about how something as mundane as typing in a line of code can have fatal consequences for people you’ve never even met, & that the more unremarkable the act, the easier it is to dismiss your part in it.
put that way, it’s easy to see how accumulative unremarkable acts can have terrible outcomes, and yet i’m often still so reluctant to do even some of the smallest unremarkable acts in the name of good, precisely because i’m not convinced it’ll make a difference.
on a good note, though, a while back i read about some microsoft engineers who refused to work on a project commissioned by the us military. that gave me a bit of hope.
“a man must have a code.” - bunk, “the wire”
