SICILY exhibition @ STELLA SOOMLAIS STUDIO

“Sicily” is an illustrated summary of my beloved native island. My aim was to amalgamate a number of distinctive Sicilian elements into a series that would warm my heart up while being far away from home. The exhibition was hosted by Estonian leather studio Stella Soomlais.
HORSE
In my hometown, horse races are organised on Saint Joseph's day. The animals are traditionally decorated with lustrous accessories.
CALTAGIRONE
The big staircase in Caltagirone consists of 142 steps, each one adorned by its own specific pattern.
MARZAMEMI
Marzamemi is a tiny village by the sea. It is a beautiful, remote jewel where I like to spend most of my summers.
TRINACRIA
A reinterpretation of our flag,  originally also featured a three-legged lady. Each leg is one of the kingdoms Sicily was previously divided into.
WINDOW
Windows in Sicily are never boring. Whichever style they follow, they always pack a quirky punch.
TESTA DI MORO
When the Moors invaded Sicily, they went as far as reproducing their own heads to make ceramic flowerpots to be placed on gateposts.
CANNOLO
A cannolo is pure deliciousness in an oven-baked dough tube. They come filled with sweet ricotta cheese, chocolate, and Lord knows what else.
ETNA
Mount Etna is the tallest volcano in Europe, measuring 3,326 m.

NERO D'AVOLA
Sicily likes its wine. Nero d'Avola is one of the most famous reds exported worldwide.

PORTOPALO
The town of Portopalo is located by the sea. A statue of the Mother Mary watches over the boats that glide on our blue waters.
