This is a concept album cover for an imagined pop folk duo called Gemini.
Gemini is planning on releasing their debut album, Appalachian Simulation, on vinyl as well as on major streaming services. Since the album is being released on vinyl, as well as on streaming services, a bright, eye catching cover is a top priority.
Research and Ideation
I've spent enough time in record stores to understand how vinyl shoppers operate. When one is aimlessly flipping through crates, an album's cover art has to make you stop flipping to consider it. If the album was going to be displayed up on a shelf, it has to compete with the records displayed near it and make the shopper at least interested enough to try to guess the sound, or make some inference from the art. I wanted it to spark curiosity.
I included a few specific elements in the design to reflect both the themes that the album explores and the characteristics of Gemini themselves, based off of this conceptualization loosely inspired by people in my life.
Gemini is all about duality. The sign represents the twins of the zodiac. People born under the gemini sign are considered to have two different sides of their personalities. The mirrored elements in the design and the double moons are designed for this. The landscape elements of the picture are pasted together from different landscapes, so despite the name Appalachian Simulation, it doesn't have a real sense of place.
