Balancing Elements

Balancing Elements
School of Architecture

Inwood Hill Park, NY, NY
The conceptual aim of these forms is to reconcile the differing elements of land and water into a habitable campus situation. Two of the three forms flow out from the hilly landscape to rise above the water while the third form begins to recede away from both elements, slowly evolving their spatial relationship. The slender
bars interact with each other in different ways, and create courtyard situations between themselves. The very front of each building frames a view of the city, creating pleasant spaces for lounging and contemplation. The curtain wall facade cladding all three buildings provides visual interaction between the interior and exterior
spaces, and maintains an aesthetic unity as a campus.

The facade provides these large buildings with a degree of transparency, reducing their heaviness and monumentality. Operable panels of glass found throughout the facade provide natural ventilation where needed. Because architecture students often benefit from the interaction in a communal learning and working
environment, the studios are kept as open-plan spaces, increasing interaction between studios of all years.
