Design Background

The goal was to create a new exterior design for an existing platform which was supposed to give more chances for other variations to be designed over the archetype for ODM customers. Being dependent on the present base brought extreme limitations. Those limitations drew an outline that possible shell alternatives’ dimensions and sections could be slightly different than the one that existed before.
Existing Platform

The product called Flora is still on the market and it was the only product that the existing base was used. There are a few parts that I wanted to change for the new product series to enrich the flexibility of making ODM variations in terms of faceplates. Also other aspects for making the new product different than the existing product range and the products that are no longer in production were examined.
My focus was on those points: Lid Opening Figure, Lid Separation Line, Edge Shape, and Flap Separation.

Ideation

Even though the rough geometrical form was already defined by the base, I tried to think partially independently of the limitations not to miss any potential form ideas and details. Finding a new characteristic by redefining the edges, replacing the lid opening detail and how the lid and the body would be separated was one of the important things that I considered during the ideation.
Final Product
—
Nova air conditioner stands out with its clear and simple appearance. While the wide-black surface on the faceplate gives a characteristic look to the product, the hidden display supports integrity. Moving the faceplate opening figure from the body to the plate makes differentiation easier for further faceplate design developments for ODM customers. Also, the angled cut between body and faceplate gives the air conditioner a dynamic impression. Unlike the previous platforms, comparatively small rounded edges are used on the product in order to make the new platform look as new as possible.
This model is manufactured for Vestel to be sold in Turkey.
