Branding: Makerspace

Brand illustration for Makerspace@NWU
The Makerspace@NWU is a facility-in-process that is primarily aimed at NWU students registered for courses in the fields of Engineering and Graphic Design. Both fields are competitive, highly pressured, require design thinking to work through problems and are directed at a practical outcome. Accompanying these two fields is a student mindset that often includes the fear of failure, stockpiling of knowledge and expertise and high stress levels that symptomatically eliminate the willingness to explore and play. The task is to develop the brand illustration system for the Makerspace@ NWU and the deployment system that it is to operate within for the purposes of launching the space – in other words, provide a solution to the problem, making use of brand illustration.
Character designs
Concept
Creating a social space for students and lecturers to come together to work on projects and also experiment with new and different materials and designs. The makerspace focus on establishing familiarity between fellow creators and especially the creators with the space.

The visuals for the makerspace is character-design based and aims to create an association between the characters and the machines. Making use of the vector based characters with muted cool colours and rounded geometric shapes, contributes to the sense of friendliness and playful characters.

Strategy
Creating a safe space with friendly antropomorphized characters to create a familiarity between fellow creators and the creators within the space.
