Citizen Science: Bug Safari

The Bug Safari allows children to learn about the environment in an active way that feels like play.

Currently 97% of parents agree play is essential for childhood development, however, 46% of children don’t play every day.

Introducing Citizen Science a program for children 5-8 year olds to get them outside in an engaging and educational way. This program will be introduced through primary school science classes and funded by the ministry of education. Citizen Science will bring out a range of series on ecosystem/species for kids to learn, ranging from bird watching, plant life to rock pools. For this project, we are focusing on the Bug Safari series.

The overall aim of this project was increase the '5 ways to wellbeing.'

Citizen Science gives children the opportunity to learn and experience scientific topics in an active way that feels like play. Teamwork activities connect  the children in a way that builds stronger communities within the classroom. With the knowledge gained through these interactions, ideally, the kids take notice of their surroundings and gain a level of respect and empathy towards the natural environment in a way that inspires them to give back to nature.
