Regular Exposure to Nature Linked to Better Health

A resident of Westbury, NY, Valerie Varnuska is interested in science. One area of particular interest for Valerie Varnuska is the role nature plays in our physical and mental health.

Recently published research from the University of East Anglia shows that spending time in green space can have a significantly positive effect on health by reducing the chances of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Additionally, people who report regular exposure to green space tend to say they have better health overall. In total, researchers examined data from 20 countries in the study.

For the purposes of the study, green space was considered in both rural and urban settings. Researchers found that people who had access to these areas had lower diastolic blood pressure, a lower heart rate, and less stress overall. Researchers believe these findings should motivate healthcare providers to recommend that their patients spend more time in nature.
