Caster Semenya enjoys ongoing support from many

On 8 March we celebrate International Women’s Day to recognise the many achievements by women. Someone worth mentioning in this context is world champion athlete Caster Semenya.

Recently, Semenya challenged the International Association of Athletics Federations’ (IAAF) rule, which, in a nutshell, would require her (and other women) to submit to medical interventions to lower her testosterone levels before competing internationally. The verdict will be delivered on 26 March. What’s significant, is the overwhelming support Caster Semenya has been receiving from her peers and supporters.

Banyana Banyana head coach, Desiree Ellis, called Semenya a beacon of hope and said that she has the support of the whole country. Ellis’ unwavering support is a great example of women backing other women in times of need.

The minister of sports and recreation, Tokozile Xasa, who travelled to Lausanne to support the athlete, called the IAAF sexist and stated that it should practise fairness instead of discriminating against certain people. Her statement speaks to the ongoing plight for gender equality.

The backing does not end here. An online petition with the hashtag #HandsOffCaster, started by the First Choice Foundation, already boasts more than 10 000 signatures.
Whether from a soccer coach, minister, or the Rainbow Nation as a whole, it is clear that the support for South Africa’s golden girl knows no bounds.
