The Old Fort Exhibition

The Old Fort at Constitution Hill - 2018
The Old Fort, which is part of the Constitution Hill complex in Johannesburg, was built in the late 1800's.
The building was used as both a military fort and a prison up until the 1980's.
Formula D interactive was tasked with developing and engaging interaction with the roughly half hectare site, using both analogue and digital touch points. Our team developed a total of 67 exhibits, housed both indoors and outdoors, bringing the history of the site to life through first person narration.
Outdoor signage constructed of steel and aluminium
A program of modular steel frames was developed to showcase graphic panels, some with integrated audio or other technology
Display cases presented objects to help bring home the messages of prisoner interviews, which were relayed on audio headphones
Some artefacts were sourced to illustrate the historical heritage of the building
Silhouette figures of the former inhabitants of the buildings tell of their experiences at that particular time in history.
Silhouette figures create a presence on the ramparts surrounding the prison complex
Two full scale replica cannons were built form steel. The Howitzer was fitted with a custom built electronic gas firing mechanism, to allow the museum to fire it once a week as a time signal, true to the history of the Fort during the Colonial period
